Together with several partners from science and industry, EdgeWave received the Stifterverband‘s Science Award 2012. The prize was awarded during the annual meeting of the Fraunhofer Society on May 8, 2012 in Stuttgart in recognition of its outstanding multi-disciplinary collaboration on the INNOSLAB laser platform for scaling the power of ultra-short lasers.

The shorter the pulses the preciser a laser tool can work. Another advantage: the processed material is not warmed up, enabling a preciser and gentler processing of highly sensitive materials through a platform which generates ulta-short laser pulses.

The INNOSLAB-amplifier – invented by Dr. Du and Prof. Dr. Loosen – is the centerpiece of the INNOSLAB platform. Four mirrors surround a laser crystal plate – the slab. A pump jet enters at the two opposite sides of the slab. The mirrors are repeatedly deflected to allow ultra-short laser pulses to keep passing the slab. Each time they do, energy is transmitted from the pump to the laser pulse until the required power is achieved. This platform was developed by the Fraunhofer-Institut for Laser Technology ILT in Aachen and refined further with several partners from industry and science: the chair for laser technology at RWTH Aachen University, the Max Planck institute for Quantum Optics MPQ in Munich and the companies Jenoptik, EdgeWave and Amphos – the last two being ILT spin-offs.

To develop new markets for laser systems with ultra-short wavelengths, the team of had to increase the mean laser output of ultra-short pulse beam sources – up to several hundred watts. Higher power makes higher production volumes in business and shorter measuring times during scientific experiments possible.

Between 2008 and 2011, two joint projects revolved around developing the new beam source: The aim of the PIKOFLAT project, supported by the Federal Ministry for Education and Research BMBF, was to structure pressure tools and embossing rollers. Here the goal was to reduce the processing time and to develop ps-lasers with an average power of 100W respectively 400W. With such ps-lasers it is possible to manufacture embossing rollers and car dashboards in as few as one or two days. In the second joint project, KORONA, Fraunhofer collaborated closely with the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics in Garching near Munich and with RWTH Aachen University. The scientists jointly developed a compact beam source whose extremely short-wavelength light makes it possible to examine nano-structures.

EdgeWave started the development of industrial-suited >1000W fs-lasers on the 1rst march of 2012. The project is being supported by the BMBF as a part of its funding initiative „Ultrakurzlaser für hochpräzise Bearbeitung“ and as part of the collaborative project „Femtosekundenlaser höchster Leistung (FOKUS)“. The collaborative project will be coordinated by EdgeWave, while the controlling agency is the VDI-TZ from Düsseldorf.

The focus of the project is the implementation of a reliable, compact and and cost effective and industrial suited fs-laser with an average power of >1000W and a pulse duration in the range from 200fs to 1ps. For the processing of materials – e.g. fiber-reinforced plastics for lightweight designs – the beam sources of the aimed-at power class will enable a significant decrease in processing time.

Lately ultra-short-pulsed laser technology has become more and more economical not only in micro machining but also in macro machining of materials while in the medical sector ultra-short-pulsed lasers enable entirely new therapeutic approaches such as highly precise cuts of the eye with minimal damage. The fundamental feature of these laser beams are their extremely high peak intensities with low pulse energy enabling highly precise ablation processes and processing of temperature sensitive materials without causing thermal damage. In the production of LEDs or computer chips the yield per wafer will increase and in one of the most performed surigcal operations, the therapy of cataracts, new significantly more efficient and cheaper methods will be implementable. Those new therapeutical methods for age-related longsightedness will be rivaling the classical reading glasses in near future.

Founded in 2001, EdgeWave has successfully commercialized the INNOSLAB technology. This robust and efficient laser design enabled the development of high power pulsed laser systems. While keeping a number of world records, EdgeWave is still pushing the limits with a brand new 400 W ps laser.

Würselen (Germany) – When EdgeWave GmbH started in 2001, it was spun off from the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT in Aachen. The core technology of the new company was the INNOSLAB laser, an innovative setup for diode pumped solid state lasers. “Searching for a reliable and scalable solid state laser design, we developed the INNOSLAB concept. And it fulfilled all the expectations” says the founder and CEO of the company, Dr. Keming Du.

In 2002, EdgeWave brought its first air-cooled and stand-alone INNOSLAB lasers to the market. Starting with 20 W output, lasers were up-scaled and new innovations were added. Several product families were created and in 2006 the first system with 200 W average power made it to the market. In 2010 a first high power ps laser with an average power of 400 W and a pulse energy up to 800 µJ was demonstrated.

The INNOSLAB technology is based on advanced diode-pumped solid state laser technology. The special geometry enables a compact resonator with excellent stability and low thermal lensing effects. These advantages make the INNOSLAB systems particularly well suited for high power and pulsed lasers. They allow for short pulses with high peak powers, while maintaining high beam quality at high average power. Another advantage is the flexibility in beam profile: the laser resonator supports beam shaping from circular, through line shaped one dimensional top-hat, to two dimensional top-hat with rectangular cross section.

The robustness on the one hand and the flexible design on the other enable a large number of applications. Today, EdgeWave lasers are applied in micro-processing of glass, scribing, edge deletion, high throughput thin film structuring, and pumping of dye lasers.

Although developed to be a workhorses, INNOSLAB lasers achieved a number of world records for pulsed lasers. The outstanding technological achievements of EdgeWave were awarded with the 1rst prize of the “INNOVATION AWARD LASER TECHNOLOGY 2010″ at the International Laser Congress Aachen AKL´10.

The most recent innovation from EdgeWave are the PX-series and QX-series. With 100 W and 400 W of average power and 10 ps pulse duration from a very compact box it will be a dedicated workhorse for micro machining applications.
